Teno Mountains, Tenerife

The ocean areas around the islands are cold due to the ocean currents from the southern, cold latitudes. When they reach the northern parts of the Canary Islands, the moisture is captured by the dense vegetation in the mountain sides. The vegetation acts like a sponge, condenses the moisture into large droplets and produces a phenomenon called horizontal rain. (WWF).

Photographs below: from a journey Trudi Jaeger made to the Teno Mountains, in an early stage of the project Illuminations Atlanterhavet.
