The first time I visited the Peneda Gerês National Park biosphere was in Spring 2024.
Across many days of walking, looking and listening, I absorbed and became familiar with the landscapes and biodiversity of this unique environment.
I was entranced by the forests and oak groves and the habitats which they are a part of and their entangled delicacy and movements and moments of light. The project had begun!
One of the beauties of travelling is how it affects the way you experience or rediscover your own environment. I live in Bergen, western Norway, which has a coastline facing and affected by the Atlantic Ocean in the same way as the Minho region of northern Portugal, a southern European variant of the rainforest belt that also characterizes the west coast of Norway.
I have been captivated by the remaining fragments of rainforest scattered along the Atlantic coastlines of England, my country of birth, Wales, Scotland and Norway. The focus of the project now is a linking between the temperate rainforest fragments of undisturbed virgin forest of Norway and their abundantly diverse counterparts in northern Portugal.
I returned to the Mata da Albergaria forest area, a part of Europe’s biogenetic reserves, in Autumn 2025 to continue my explorations.
Noticing – Notations from forests of the rain – A rainy breath is an ongoing project, and this exhibition presented as an installation in an architectural space in the historical centre of Braga, is an attempt to invite an audience into an open and evolving process. Works on paper, text, photography and a video about the process, ‘Ambiguities of seeing’ are some of the components in the installation.
A rainy breath also alludes to Marcel Proust and his writings about time, memory, self and loss, and how sensory experiences reveal themselves and change over time.
This is the first of a series of installations inspired by the northern Atlantic rainforests.
The next one will take place in Norway in 2027.

Første gang jeg besøkte biosfæren i Peneda Gerês nasjonalpark var våren 2024.
Gjennom mange dager med vandring, observasjon og lytting, absorberte jeg og ble kjent med landskapene og det biologiske mangfoldet i dette unike miljøet.
Jeg ble betatt av skogene og eikelundene og habitatene de er en del av, og deres sammenfiltrede delikatesse, bevegelser og lysøyeblikk. Prosjektet hadde begynt!
En av skjønnhetene ved å reise er hvordan det påvirker måten du opplever eller gjenoppdager ditt eget miljø på. Jeg bor i Bergen i Vest-Norge, som har en kystlinje som vender mot og er påvirket av Atlanterhavet på samme måte som Minho-regionen i Nord-Portugal, en søreuropeisk variant av regnskogbeltet som også kjennetegner vestkysten av Norge.
Jeg har blitt fascinert av de gjenværende fragmentene av regnskog spredt langs Atlanterhavskysten av England, mitt fødeland, Wales, Skottland og Norge. Fokuset i prosjektet er nå en kobling mellom de tempererte regnskogfragmentene av uforstyrret urskog i Norge og deres rikt mangfoldige motstykker i Nord-Portugal.
Høsten 2025 reiste jeg tilbake til skogområdet Mata da Albergaria, en del av Europas biogenetiske reservater, for å fortsette utforskningen min.
Noticing – Notations from forests of the rain – A rainy breath er et pågående prosjekt, og denne utstillingen, presentert som en installasjon i et arkitektonisk rom i Bragas historiske sentrum, er et forsøk på å invitere publikum inn i en åpen og utviklende prosess. Works on paper, tekst, fotografi og en video om prosessen «Ambiguities of seeing» er noen av komponentene i installasjonen.
A rainy breath også alluderer til Marcel Proust og hans skriving om tid, hukommelse, selv og tap, og hvordan sanseopplevelser åpenbarer seg og endrer seg over tid.
Dette er den første i en serie installasjoner inspirert av regnskogene i Nord-Atlanteren.
Den neste finner sted i Norge i 2027.
